Abstract
Ion-exchange resins in the shape of sheets, rods, discs or tubes are made by copolymerizing a compound containing an ethylenic double bond and an acidic or basic group, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic and chloroacrylic acids and diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, with a cross-linking agent containing two or more ethylenic double bonds, e.g. divinyl benzene and ethylene dimethacrylate, the reaction mixture containing reactants and water in substantially the proportion required to make the product water-saturated, in general between 20 and 35 per cent of the reaction mixture, the whole reaction being carried out under conditions such that water cannot escape. Copolymerization is assisted by catalysts, such as ammonium persulphate and diazoaminobenzene, and is preferably carried out in a closed vessel corresponding to the shape to be produced. Sheets supported on filter paper, sintered glass discs or porous unglazed porcelain may be made by immersing the support in the reaction mixture before polymerization.
