Abstract

Salts heavier than water are recovered from waste acidic or basic solutions, e.g., waste water from the viscose process, by flash evaporation under vacuum so that the waste solution partly evaporates and partly crystallizes to ice and salt crystals which with the residual liquid are accumulated in a pool from which the ice and salt crystals are mechanically separated while the residual solution is recycled. The waste liquor is fed through line 1, together with residual liquid recirculated through line 23, to distributer heads 3, feeding tubes 4 in an evaporator 5 maintained under vacuum by a pump connected to the vapour offtake 29 and provided with a conical bottom 19 and barometric tube 24 in which a pool of liquid is maintained. The residual liquor is recirculated through <PICT:0744430/III/1> <PICT:0744430/III/2> the annular space provided between bottoms 19, 21 and thence through line 22, pump 2 and line 23, while the deposited salts flow down through the tube 24 to settling tank 25 from which they are recovered by bucket and worm conveyer 26, 27. A rotary scraper 8 driven by a motor 9 removes the ice crystals over a perforated surface 11 to the inlet 12 of a worm 14 working in a perforated jacket 15 where water is separated and returned by pump 16 to the tube 24 while ice crystals are separated through opening 17. Preferably the distributer heads 3 feed the solution to tubes 4 down which the solution flows in films and is directed to the centre of the evaporator by guides 6. The vapours removed through offtake 29 pass to the inlet 29 of an absorber (Fig. 3) of similar configuration to the evaporator, the vapours passing to tubes 30 sealed into an intermediary plate 31 where they are absorbed by sulphuric acid or like absorbent introduced through line 38 and recirculated through cooler 35 and line 36, surplus absorbent being injected through lines 45, 46 to absorb vapours in the exhaust condensers 43, 44 of the high vacuum jet pumps 40, 41.
