Abstract

744,323. Dielectric heating of webs. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 23, 1954 [May 21, 1953], No. 14309/53. Class 39(3). [Also in Group XIII] In dielectric heating for the treatment of webs e.g. drying wall-paper and photographic film or curing rubber in web form, the electrode system is divided into sections arranged one after the other so that there is a knee in the path of travel of the web as viewed edgewise of the web on passing from one section to the next. There may be three sections with horizontally extending transverse electrodes 8, 9, the first section providing an upwardly sloping path for the web, the next a horizontal path and the third a downwardly sloping path. The sections may be tangential to a common circle. The -electrodes 8, 9 comprise metal tubes. In each section the electrodes 8 on one side of the web are interconnected by a metal strip 10 on a common support 15 and electrodes 9 on the other side of the web are connected to a common support 14, and each support is adjustable towards or away from the web by a threaded rod and nut 16. The lower support is adjustable parallel to the direction of web travel by a threaded rod with a handle 22. The sections may be supplied from a single or separate R.F. generators and air heated by passing over the oscillator valves to cool them may be passed over the web in countercurrent thereto to remove moisture and vapours from coated films. Specifications 633,731, [Group XIII], and 744,322 are referred to.
