Abstract
743,741. Induction motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 7, 1954 [July 8, 1953], No. 18947/53. Class 35. An induction motor, for driving cranes &c., is wound with two alternatively energizable stator windings 3, 4 of different pole numbers, and corresponding rotor windings 8, of low resistance connected to controlling resistance 11, and 9 of high resistance and permanently short circuited. The short-circuited winding 9 is of lower pole-number, i.e. produces a higher speed for driving the crane when unloaded and comprises a series of coils each shorted on itself and of such a pitch that they are not influenced by the higher pole-number, while the winding 8, which produces a lower speed is also used under load. Speed control in normal working is achieved by energizing the low-speed and high-speed windings in reverse rotations, and regulating the torque of winding 8 by means of rheostat 11.
