Abstract

742,947. Ventilating vehicles. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. April 26, 1954 [April 27, 1953], No. 11644/53. Class 137. Apparatus particularly for ventilating vehicles comprises a sheet metal casing 1 which has a rectangular portion 2 surrounding a radiator element 3 supplied through pipes 4, 5 with hot coolant from the engine cooling system, and which is mountable by brackets 26 parallel with the vehicle dash board with its louvred face, not shown, directed toward the vehicle interior and the remaining tapered portion 5 directed away from the passenger compartment. A fan 6, driven by an electric motor 7 is arranged adjacent the inner face of the element 3 (and inlet openings 12, 13, controlled by butterfly valves 10, 11, communicate with fresh air and air from the vehicle interior respectively. An opening 8 leads to the vehicle windscreen, not shown. The valve 10 is mounted on a shaft 14 which has also mounted thereon a control lever 15, a cam 16, and an arm 17 having a pin 18 capable of engaging with a slot 19 in the end of the operating lever for a switch 9 controlling the motor 7. The cam 16, having a single lobe, is adapted to engage with a pin 20 on a lever 21 which is pivoted about an axis parallel to the shaft 14, and is connected by a link 23 to the valve 11. The lever 21 is loaded by a spring 22 to normally hold the valve closed. In operation the initial movement of the lever 15 opens the valve 10 and due to ram effect, fresh air is forced through the radiator 3 and heated air is supplied through the louvred face of the casing 1 to the vehicle interior. Upon moving the lever 15 further, the pin 18 engages the slot 19 and the fan motor 7 is started, the fan blade 6, being designed to supply air axially and certrifugally, increases the flow of fresh air through the element 3 and also delivers fresh air centrifugally to the opening 8 for demisting the windscreen. When the valve 10 is fully open the cam 16 operates the lever 21 and the valve 11 is opened so that the fresh air is supplemented by recirculated air from within the vehicle interior. In the extreme position of the lever 15 both valves 10, 11 are shut, the centrifugal effect of the fan 6 causing air to be drawn through the louvred opening at the front of the casing for delivery of hot air, at low velocity, to the windscreen.
