Abstract

742,383. Controlling aircraft. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Oct. 9, 1952 [Oct. 10, 1951], No. 23593/51. Class 4. Means for providing " feel " in poweroperated flying control systems for aircraft include means for opposing the displacement of the control column in a direction to give lateral control, by a force controlled by a Machmeter on the aircraft so that the opposing force increases with increase in Mach number. The pilot's control column 1 is movable about axes a-a, e-e to operate links A and E connected respectively to servo mechanisms for operating the ailerons and elevators. Connected also to the column 1 are rods 2a, 2e, the free ends of which carry pins engaging in slots 7a, 7e in levers 3a, 3e respectively secured to torsion bars 4a, 4e. The pins on the ends of the rods 2a, 2e are secured to actuators 8a, 8e, the actuator 8e being controlled by a transmitter 9 driven by a rod 10 connected to the dynamic pressure capsule 11 of a Machmeter, and the actuator 8s being operated by a transmitter 12 into which is fed a signal derived from the divider and converter 13 of the Machmeter 15. Trimmer actuators 5a, 5e are connected to levers secured to the ends of the torque tubes 4a, 4e remote from the levers 3a, 3e.
