Abstract
742,355. Electroluminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 31, 1953 [Dec. 31, 1952], No. 36354/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). Electroluminescent copper activated zinc aluminium sulphide is prepared by firing in an atmosphere of hydrogen sulphide containing from 0.01-20 per cent of an oxygen-containing gas, the copper content of the mixture before firing being 0.1-0.4 per cent by weight of zinc sulphide and the aluminium 25-250 mol. per cent of the copper. The oxygen-containing gas may be water vapour, air, CO 2 or SO 2 . The Cu and A1 are added as nitrates, sulphates, chlorides &c. The fired powder may be washed with NaCN (5 per cent) to remove excess copper sulphide. In preparing the material, mixtures of ZnS and ZnO may be used in place of pure ZnS or even ZnO converted into the sulphide by heating in pure H 2 S. Air or CO 2 may be added to the stream of H 2 S for the phosphor firing atmosphere by slow displacement in a flask admitting water and subsequently freezing out the water vapour at -57‹ C. The Specification includes a number of examples in which the presence of large quantities of oxygen give blue electroluminescence, whilst small quantities give green. The phosphors are convertible by reheating in the appropriate atmosphere. The presence of aluminium gives a stable green electroluminescence unaffected by frequency shift. Specification 734,652 is referred to,
