Abstract

742,315. One-way brakes. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD. Dec. 21, 1953 [Dec. 19, 1952], No. 32329/52. Addition to 707,410. Class 103 (1). [Also in Groups I and XXIX] In apparatus for the removal of sludge from a settling tank comprising a run-off pipe 1 moved intermittently around the tank by the alternate expansion and contraction of a bellows 3 (see Group I or Group XXIX) an anchor device 11 and spragging-mechanism 16 different from those disclosed in the parent Specification are provided. On contraction of the bellows its end-plate 6 moves to the left, whereupon nuts 8, 9 on a rod 7 attached to the plate move a strip 13 (supported at its inner end on the pipe 1) to the left, this in turn moving to the left a carriage 11 by contact with an anchor arm 10A on the carriage having one end close to the rail 12. Movement ceases when the arm 10A again comes into contact with a boss 15. Movement of the pipe 1 to the right during the bellows contraction is prevented by an arm 19 which through a bolt 19A having loose connection with an anchor arm 17A on a carriage 16 pulls the anchor arm to the right, thus jamming its inner end, and that of a similar lug 17B, against the rail 12. When the bellows expands, movement of the plate 6 to the right is prevented by engagement of the boss 15 with the anchor arm 10A which in co-operation with a lug 10B thereupon locks the carriage 11 against the rail 12. Accordingly, the end of the pipe 1 moves to the left, the arm 19 sliding the carriage 16 along by engagement of a rubber spring 20A upon it with the anchor arm 17A.
