742,067. Making finger grips in metal casings. VALOR CO., Ltd. Feb. 26, 1954 [Feb. 28, 1953], No. 5688/53. Class 83 (2). A sheet-metal casing, e.g. for a heater, comprises side panels 15 to which is secured a flanged top cover 23, the panels being provided with finger grips made integral with each panel by slitting the panel to form a tongue 17 and then bending a portion 18 of the tongue near its root out of the plane of the panel to provide a channel recess 19, the remainder of the tongue lying on the plane of the panel after which the flanged top cover 23 is fitted and secured, e.g. by spot welding, on the slitted side panel with its flange 24 overlying the tongue and marginal pillars 21 of the panel on each side of the tongue. The panel 15 is provided with flanges 20 at the top of the pillars 21, Fig. 5, and also side flanges 22 for attachment to other side panels. In an embodiment the grips may be formed at two opposed parts of a single wall bent to the shape of the casing and jointed by a single joint. If the top cover has a chamfered or curved part at each corner the panels 15 with the finger grips are cropped as at 25 to clear the corners of the top cover.
