Abstract

741,833. Earth-boring apparatus. CARRUTHERS, C. J. D. May 10, 1954 [Feb. 10, 1953], No. 3683/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 85. Means are provided in a drill string to damp out the longitudinal and torsional vibrations set up in a drill string by the periodic impacts on the bottom of a borehole by the teeth of the roller cones of the earth - boring kit. The means comprise fundamentally a length of metal attached to the bit and slidably mounted on the lower end of the interconnected drill rods of the drill string, or attached either at the lower end of said drill rods, or at a distance from said lower equal to half the length or a multiple of said length of a fundamental harmonic of the longitudinal or torsional harmonies. The metal length extends for a distance equal to one quarter of the length of the fundamental harmonic of the longitudinal or torsional vibration, or for a fraction of this length corresponding to an order of another harmonic of said vibration. The unattached end of the metal length is free to move axially or circumferentially. One or more lengths of metal of a length determined by the other harmonies of the vibration may also be used and these shorter lengths may have splined extensions of such a length as to bring the combined effective length to a length equal to a quarter of the length of an harmonic of the next higher order of the other form of vibration than that for which the short length was designed to deal with.
