The wire-cloth of a Fourdrinier or of a cylinder paper-making machine, or the wirecloth surface of a cylinder mould has an under, plain ply, united to an upper or outer, corrugated ply at the troughs of the corrugations, as by welding, soldering, or brazing, e.g. with strands of silver solder woven into one or both plies. The corrugations are transverse to the machine direction so that the wire-cloth can run over rolls, and are over-filled with pulp to produce a web as illustrated, the thin parts 21 of which are more compacted than are the thick parts 19. A plain facing ply which may be wet and freshly felted may be united to one or both surfaces of the web, e.g. at the wet end of a Fourdrinier machine. A suction couch roll or rolls may be used, and the web may be dried while passing over a series of conveyers in a drying chamber. In one embodiment, a suction forming-cylinder with two suction compartments abuts the end of a pulp vat, and in another, web-formation occurs on a cylinder mould in a vat, due to a hydrostatic head.
