Abstract
741,480. Laminating apparatus. GOODYEAR AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Sept. 1, 1952 [Dec. 4, 1951], No. 21918/52. Class 140. A pair of multi-curved, resin-impregnated, void-free laminates is made by supporting one laminate from the inside only and the other laminate from the outside only in substantially the shapes to which they are to be moulded, placing a bleeder cloth over the exposed face of each laminate, covering each laminate and bleeder cloth with a bag, applying fluid pressure below atmospheric to the inside of each bag, nesting one laminate inside the other and while effecting a cure of the laminates applying fluid pressure above atmospheric between the bags. As shown, a plurality of layers of resin-impregnated fibrous material, which may be glass fibre cloth, are placed separately on each of a male and female mould 1, 3 to form the faces of a foamed-in laminate 5, each of which is then covered with a dry bleeder cloth 6 of about ¢ to <SP>1</SP>/ 3 the thickness of the laminate, whereupon a vacuum bag 7 is placed on each of the bleeder cloths 6 and sealed against flanges 2, 4 respectively, by rubber gaskets 8 and metal rings 9 which are fastened to the flanges by cap screws 10. Air outlets 11 are provided for each mould and a bleeder ring 12 made of porous material near the inner flange portions along which the outlets are located and air is simultaneously exhausted from both outlets 11, after which the moulds are nested and spaced from each other by a metal ring 13 sealed against ring 9 and provided with an air pressure inlet 14 through which pressure of about 30 pounds per square inch is admitted between the bags 7 for about 15 to 20 minutes when bleeding of the excess resin and all air is completed, whereupon heat is slowly applied for 30 to 45 minutes to a temperature of about 150 F. Curing of the laminate is completed by exposing to a temperature of 180 to 200 F. for about 2 hours after which the laminates are removed from the moulds and the bleeder cloth peeled off. In forming a foamed-in radome the moulds with the laminates left therein are reassembled for pouring a foam core therebetween.
