Class 40(1) Apparatus for determining the angular displacement of the stator of a motor 10 (Fig. 1) comprises two generators 12, 13 arranged to give A.C. voltages whoses frequencies are dependent on the absolute angular velocity of the rotor shaft 11, and on the angular velocity of the shaft 11 relative to the stator respectively, those voltages being combined at 16 to give a DC voltage indicative of the difference in frequencies and therefore indicative of the angular velocity of the stator of motor 10, which is integrated at 18 to indicate at 19 the total angular displacement of the stator. The generator 12 may comprise an oscillator 24 (Fig. 2) whose frequency is determined by a capacitor 22 having one rigid plate 21 and one curved, flexible plate 20 attached to the shaft 11, so that when the shaft rotates the curved plate 20 tends to flatten thereby varying the oscillatory frequency of oscillator 24. The generator 13 may comprise a pick-up coil 27 (Fig. 3) fixed relative to the stator of motor 10 and located adjacent to a wheel 25 attached to the shaft 11 and having a number of permanent-magnet teeth 26 on the periphery whereby the frequency of the signals induced in the pick-up 27 is proportional to the angular velocity of the stator relative to the rotating shaft.
