[Also in Group XII] Apparatus controlling the sequence of operations in discharging a horizontal coke oven battery incorporating a coke pusher machine 24 and a coke guide machine 25, comprises pneumatically controlled mechanism for unlatching the appropriate doors 5 and for preventing operation of the pusher ram 26, until pneumatic connection is made between a compressor 29 on the coke guide machine 25 and a control member 35 on the coke pusher machine 24 via the appropriate pipe 9 extending over the battery 2 and associated with each oven chamber 1. Each pipe 9 is connected to a locking device 11 or 12 controlling the lowermost latch 10 of each door 5 and is also connected via a three-way cock 15 with a compressed air main 14. Each looking device comprises a housing 16, Fig. 2, enclosing a spring-pressed piston 17 formed with a spigot 20 normally holding the door latch 10 in a closed position. When the cock 15 is opened, air passing from the pipe 9 through a lateral port 22 in the housing 16 depresses the piston 17 against the action of the spring 18, releasing the latch 10. The doors are then removed by conventional doorhandling mechanism mounted on each machine. The ram motor control incorporates the compressor 29, a pressure cylinder 34 and a pipe 30 with a valve 48 mounted in the coke guide machine and making connection through an automatic coupling 32 with a branch pipe 43 extending from each pipe 9, and the control member 35, a switch 37, a ram motor relay 38 and a pipe 33 mounted on the coke pusher machine and making connection through an automatic coupling 31 with a branch pipe 42 extending from each pipe 9. The automatic couplings 31, 32 may be of the type described in Specification 701,355, [Group XII], and the pressure in the system is several times that in the air main 14. A non-return valve 44 in the connection 42 prevents passage of air when subject only to the pressure from the main 14. When the machines are correctly positioned, the automatic couplings 31, 32 complete the pneumatic circuit, the valve 48 is turned on, and the pressure in the system actuates the control member 35, the switch 37 and the relay 38, allowing the ram motor to be started, and also lighting a warning lamp 39 and giving an audible signal. Fig. 4 (not shown) discloses a mechanical door-locking system in which removal of the door on the coke pusher side releases a lever connected by a cable to a counterweighted latch holder on the coke guide side of the battery.
