741,079. Machinery guards. PHILIPPE, R. Dec. 24, 1953, No. 35830/53. Class 80(4) A guard for a band saw 5 or for presses or other machines, is automatically raised on the approach of a workpiece and comprises a plate 4 of transparent material secured to a verticallyslidable rail 1. The rail 1 is raised by a forked arm 9 which is pivoted on a fixed arm 13 and is rigid with a ballended work - engaging arm 7. A segmental slipper 6 of aluminium or other material is bolted to the lower edge of the plate 4. The rail 1 is guided by slides 2 on a fixed guard 3. In a modification the transparent guard is carried by a pair of steel rods which slide between two fixed pairs of plates which are spaced by bolts arranged so that the rods have line and point engagement respectively with the plates and bolt shanks. In this construction the arm 13 is preferably adjustable, while the arm 7 has an upwardly-bent work-engaging end and is shorter than the arm 9 so that the end of the latter has an exaggerated movement and the slipper on the guard is raised' and held out of contact with the work until the arm 7 is released. In this construction also the end of the arm 9 is curved instead of slotted and the segmental slipper has a flattened rear face. In another modification a. transparent guard is carried by a parallel link assembly. It is stated that the arm 7 and the plate 4 may each carry a work-engaging roller, and that the guard may be curved so that the sawing band is more or less surrounded.
