Class 38(3) [Also in Group XXII] A controlling arrangement for the driving motor of a machine, e.g. shears, has a recording medium moving at a speed which is a function of the speed of an element of the machine from a recording to a pick-up device, the recording device recording a signal on the medium in correspondence with an operation of the machine and the pick-up device responding to the recorded signal to operate the driving motor. Rollers 2 feeding rod 1 from a rolling mill to shears 3 driven by a motor 4 drive through a reducing gear 5 a steel tape 8. Actuation of a switch 14 operates the motor 4 so that the shears 3 to make a cut and cause the recording device 9 to record a signal on the tape 8. The signal actuates the pick-up 10 and is erased by a device 11. The pick-up 10 in response to the signal operates the motor 4 so that the shears make a cut and cause the recording device to record another signal. The distance between the recording device 9 and the pick-up 10 is adjustable to determine the cut length of the rod. In a modification the tape is driven by a differential device. controlled by the speeds of two or more elements of the machine and also the spacing between the recording device and the pick-up may be controlled according to the positions of various elements of the machine.
