Abstract

740,396. Overhead travelling hoists. ROBERTS CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd., and DAWSON,S.E. May 18, 1953 [May 23,1952], No. 13960/53. Class 78 (4). A beam 1 for carrying a lifting device slides vertically on a pair of uprights 2 each mounted on a carriage 6 carried by a pair of independently steered wheel assemblies 7. The uprights 2 are preferably capable of limited movement about the axis of the beam 1 to accommodate irregularities in the ground; in the construction illustrated this movement is permitted by torsion of the beam 1 which is connected by brackets 4 to bearings 3 sliding on the uprights 2 and raised and lowered by block and tackle 16. The uprights 2 are rotatably mounted in a socket 5 formed on carriages 6 each provided with a pair of wheels 7 mounted for rotation about a vertical axis but capable of being locked against castoring, and adapted to be driven through chains and sprockets from manual cranks 13. Draw-bars 11 are connected to steer the wheels. For transport the beam 1, the uprights 2 and the carriages 6 may be separated and the wheel units may be removed from the carriages by disconnecting flanged joints 20; the bearings 3 may be split for disassembly.
