Abstract

739,362. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 29, 1954 [Feb. 2, 1953], No. 2766/54. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] A movable mark is positioned between an object to'be televised and the photo-cathode of an image type tube and is adapted to move upon variation of the magnification of the electronoptical system so that an edge of the storage electrode is always screened from photoelectrons for all magnification settings. The screened edge so produced is employed to generate a " black " level signal when impinged by the scanning beam of the tube. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), the mask 28 is mechanically coupled, via elements 30-34, to a shaft 24 which also controls the electron-optical magnification of the tube 1 by adjustment of potentiometers 21-23 which control the current in the focusing coils 18-20, the arrangement being such that the portion of the photo-cathode screened from incident light increases with increase of magnification. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2), the current in one of the focusing coils 23 is employed to energize an electromagnet 35 to displace the mask against the force of a spring 37. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3), the mask provided a rectangular aperture formed by two portions 38, 39 which are moved along one of the diagonals of the aperture by means of elements 40-42 controlled by electromagnet 35 and spring 37.
