Abstract

739,013. Screw-sockets; rail-spikes; woodscrews. SNYDER, J. R. June 22, 1953, No. 17208/53. Classes 89(1) and 89(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXX] A metal-to-wood fastening comprises a metal fastener e.g. a spike or screw, engaging a bore in the wood member, a capsule of treating material being placed in the bore whereby the driving-in of the fastener ruptures the capsule and diffuses the material into the wood about the bore, so that when set, it hardens and preserves the wood and increases the strength of the connection. The material comprises a thermo-setting resin, e.g. phenol, urea, melamine or resorcinal formaldehyde and a hardener e.g. formaldehyde, and may additionally include a plasticizing agent, e.g. a vinyl resin. Suitable proportions by weight are 93 to 30 per cent of aldehyde resin ; 2 to 20 per cent of vinyl resin and 5 to 50 per cent of hardener. As shown, the fastener comprises a spike 14 or screw 13 or 16, Fig. 1, securing a rail 12, sole plate 11 and tie 15, respectively, to a wooden sleeper 10. The treating material is packed in a capsule 40, Fig. 3, the hardener 43 being separated from the resin 41 by an inner partition 42. In another form the resin is contained in a capsule 45, Fig. 4, and the hardener in an end compartment 47. The capsules may be of moulded plastic material which resists chemical action of the material contained thereby, and may fit the preformed bores 19, 20, 31 in the sleeper. The resin and hardener are mixed in the bore after rupture of the capsule by the screw or spike. The spike is of square cross-section with a chisel point and the screws have tapered portions 27, 37 which cause pressurization of the treating material as they are driven in.
