Abstract
738,931. Agitating appliance for blood transfusion apparatus. RIEUTORD, L. M. A., and LEWIN, J. Oct. 9, 1953 [Oct. 11, 1952], No. 27817/53. Class 86. Agitating apparatus for blood and anticoagulant liquid in a bottle 32 in the course of a blood transfusion, is operated by the blood donor by successive actions upon a control device held in the donor's hand and connected by mechanism, including a free wheel device 50 and eccentric drive 35, to a plate 15 carrying the bottle 32 and suspended for movement substantially in its own plane. The plate 15, which is triangular, is suspended within a cage-like support by means of a rigid rod 16 at each of two corners of the plate pivotally connected by universal joints to the plate and to the top of the support, and by a V-shaped wire 19 with its apex at the third corner of the plate pivotally connected to the plate and the top of the support by means of eye members 20, 21. The plate 15 is tensioned by springs 22, 25 connected between the plate and the bottom of the support. The eccentric 35 engages the plate 15 by means of a resilient bushing 34, and when it is rotated by operation of the control device, it imparts to the plate a movement such that any point on the plate describes a closed curve which is very similar to an ellipse having an axis which substantially intersects the axis XX. The control device consists of a hand grip formed by pivoted members 56, 61, the successive movements of which are transmitted by a flexible cable 67 in a flexible sheath 66 to a cord 73 which is tensioned by a spring 80, is guided by pulleys 74, 78 and is wound around the operating member of the free wheel 50 to which it imparts rotary reciprocation. The free wheel 50 drives a shaft which carries the eccentric 35 at its upper end and a fly-wheel 47 near its lower end which ensures continuous rotation of the shaft. The bottle 32 is secured to the plate 15 at an angle thereto so that the movement of the plate does not result in mere rotation of the liquid in the bottle. The invention is also applicable for agitating liquids other than in the course of blood transfusion.
