Abstract
738,512. Inks. STANDARD REGISTER CO. March 10, 1953, No. 6603/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 146(3). [Also in Groups VIII and XVI] In making transfer papers, a sheet of paper adapted to be written, typed or otherwise inscribed upon on one side, is coated on the other side with a non-tacky, colourless or light coloured material adapted to be transferred at the inscribed areas to another sheet of paper in contact therewith, the material containing two reagent compounds in an acid medium serving to prevent reaction therebetween, and the compounds being such that they will react to form a dark-coloured substance when the acid medium is neutralised. In the preferred embodiment the paper is coated with an aqueous emulsion containing a water-immiscible volatile organic liquid, a higher carboxylate (i.e. containing more than 8 carbon atoms) of a polyvalent metal whose sulphide is colourless, an alkali metal sulphide and an acidic manganese salt in amount sufficient to produce acidity in the emulsion, the sheet is dried and the coated surface is coated with another aqueous emulsion containing a water-immiscible organic liquid and a higher carboxylate of a metal whose sulphide is dark, and again drying the sheet. The transferred writing, &c., is made visible by treating with dry ammonia gas. In examples, paper is first coated with an aqueous emulsion containing manganese nitrate, potassium sulphide, carbon tetrachloride and aluminium palmitate, and after drying is coated with an aqueous emulsion containing carbon tetrachloride, aluminium palmitate and (1) lead nitrate, or (2) silver nitrate, manganese nitrate and shellac. The aluminium palmitate in example (2) may be replaced by aluminium chloride and other light coloured natural or synthetic resins may be used instead of shellac. Other ingredients specified are :-immiscible organic liquids-benzene and toluene ; metal salts -aluminium, calcium and zinc salts of stearic, naphthenic or other resin acids, lead palmitate and water-soluble salts of lead, silver, tin (stannous) and bismuth, e.g. basis lead acetate.
