Abstract
738,179. Rotary cultivators. ROTARY HOES, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1953 [Jan. 8, 1953], No. 575/53. Class 6 (1). Relates to rotary cultivators of the type having a rotor with its axis transverse to the line of travel, the rotor including blades spaced around its periphery and extending generally parallel to its axis. According to the invention the blades 24 are thin and are bolted throughout their lengths to rigid backing plates 22 which are integral with axially-spaced, radiallyextending, supports 11, 12, 13, 14 fixed to the rotor-shaft 17. The backing plates are mounted between slots in adjacent supports and the groups of backing plates may be arranged in straight or curved lengths along the rotor or they may be staggered helically, as shown. Each plate 22 has slots 26 to enable the blade gradually to be advanced to take up wear and additional stiffness is imparted by stiffening plates 23 welded between the supports so as to rest edgeways against the blades 24. Chisel-like blades 30 are mounted adjustably in tubular holders 28 on the outermost supports 11, 12 to cut a clearance for the rotor. The rotor may be driven in either direction and holes for the securing of a driving sprocket are provided in both end-supports. In a modification, the supports 11-14 do not extend to the full diameter of the rotor but are merely flanges on the shaft 17, the backing-plates being integral with segmental discs which are bolted to the flanges to build up the rotor-structure.
