Abstract
<PICT:0737394/III/1> In a process for producing synthetis gas from gaseous hydrocarbons or gases containing them, in particular from methane-containing gases, by reaction with oxygen or an air-oxygen mixture the formation of soot is inhibited by recycling to the gas to be cracked, cracked hydrocarbon gas or synthesis gas and the reaction is effected without precombustion, with starting gases which are not supersaturated with water vapour and are preferably cold, in a single stage using conventional catalysts at an elevated temperature. The gases are preferably cooled before entering the chamber containing the catalyst and the arrangement for the supply of the reactant gases to the reaction chamber is such that the speed of flow of the oxygen or air-oxygen mixture alone in the feed duct to the reaction chamber is maintained above the maximum ignition velocity of hydrocarbon and recycled gas with oxygen or air-oxygen mixture. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 a mixer 1 is supplied with desired amounts of oxygen at 2 and air at 3 and the resulting air-oxygen mixture is mixed in a mixer 4 with hydrocarbon containing and recycled cracked or synthesis gas supplied at 5. The reactant mixture passes through tubes 15 which have a cross-sectional area chosen to ensure that the velocity of the gases flowing through the tubes is always greater than the p maximum ignition velocity of the reactant mixture and which are cooled externally by water entering at 13 and leaving at 14. The tubes 15 are interrupted at intervals so that the gases pass through perforated baffle plates 7 and 8, other sets of baffle plates are provided at 5 and 9. The reactant mixture enters the reaction chamber 16 through a grate 19 which also has a water-cooled tube system, the cross-sectional area of the tubes being such as to ensure the required minimum flow velocity. The grate 19 supports fireclay bodies 17 and a bed of catalyst 18. In a modification the mixer 4 is omitted and the grate 19 is designed as a mixer for the air-oxygen mixture and the hydrocarbon and recycled gases. In a further modification apparatus described provides a second reaction chamber in which the cracked gases from the first reaction chamber are, after cooling from about 800-900 DEG C. to about 400 DEG C. and in the presence of steam reacted to convert the carbon monoxide and steam into carbon dioxide and hydrogen with the use of known catalysts.
