A lighting &c. column a of reinforced concrete is secured to a cranked concrete root member c by four bolts d which are cast with the root member and which extend through sleeved holes b in the column and are secured by nuts f and a plate e. The plate and nuts may be covered by a concrete pad g. Alternatively wires or rods extending longitudinally from the butt of the column are threaded through holes in the horizontal arm of the root member and are secured by grips or wedges on the underside of the arm.
