Abstract

Light-coloured elastomeric products are obtained from synthetic rubber latices prepared by emulsion polymerization, admixed if desired with natural rubber latex, by drying the product obtained by coagulation in the presence of a diphenyl amine substituted in the nucleus, and reducing agents. The amine may be a reaction product of diphenyl amine with styrene, cyclohexene, or isoheptanol; and the reducing agents may be alkali metal salts of sulphurous, phosphorous, hypophosphorous and arsenious acids, or hydrogen sulphide; the free bases and salts of hydroxylamine or hydrazine; ferrous, titanous and stannous salts; glucose, aliphatic and heterocyclic mercaptans; salts of hydroxyalkyl-sulphinic and aromatic sulphuric acids; and esters of phosphorous acids, phenyl hydrazine sulphonic acids and phenyl hydrazine. The synthetic rubbers may be polymers of butadiene-1,3, isoprene, and 2-chloroprene, and copolymers of these monomers with styrene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, vinyl methyl ketone, and vinylidene chloride. In an example (1) a reaction product of styrene and diphenyl amine was added to an aqueous emulsion of a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer with from 1 to 5 per cent of a reducing agent consisting of sodium polysulphide, glucose, sodium salt of hydroxymethane sulphinic acid, hydroxylamine sulphate, stannous chloride, dodecyl mercaptan, sodium sulphite, thiophenol or 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, and the mass coagulated and dried.
