Abstract

735,327. Heat-treating metals. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd. Dec. 11, 1953 [Dec. 12, 1952], No. 31580/52. Class 72. In apparatus for the local heat treatment, particularly hardening by high-frequency electromagnetic induction, of parts spaced along the length of an elongated metal workpiece, the workpiece moves longitudinally relatively to a heater and a quench which are arranged so that when any one save the first of the parts to be heat treated lies in the heating zone the preceding part just heated lies in the quench, and there is provided means, preferably an escapement mechanism, for automatically causing or permitting the said movement to occur intermittently at intervals corresponding to a predetermined heating cycle to bring the parts to be treated successively into the heating zone and keep them there for an appropriate period. In one embodiment, for the surface hardening by induction of spaced cams, two cam shafts to be treated can be mounted vertically between pairs of opposed pairs of centring and supporting spindles 25, 26 in a vertically movable carriage 10 which is moved to its highest position in the machine by a pneumatic ram 13 and allowed to fall in stages past a stationary inductor 11 and a quench 12 whereby each cam of the work is brought in turn into the heating zone of the inductor 11 for a predetermined period, after which the carriage falls to its next stage, transporting the heated cam into the quenching zone and bringing the next succeeding cam into the heating zone. The stages of descent of the carriage are determined by a stepped rack 14 secured to it, which rack is provided with two parallel staggered rows of projecting steps 15 which correspond to the positions in which the carriage is required to dwell. A pair of pneumatically operated timing bolts 16, 17 is provided, the bolts being arranged horizontally side by side, and each bolt, when in the forward position, engaging one or other of the two rows of steps 15, the bolts being withdrawn alternately by a timing device to allow the carriage to fall in the required stages.
