734,616. Comparison speed indicators. BURGSMUELLER, K. Jan. 31, 1953, No. 2836/53. Class 106 (3). A device for indicating synchronism of the peripheral speeds of gears to be meshed in a gear-box comprises an indicator rotated at a speed related to the output speed of the gearbox and a light source adapted to flash at a frequency related to the input speed of the gearbox. The indicator bears a plurality of series of markings, each series corresponding respectively to a gear change of the gear-box and the arrangement of the markings in each series is such that when synchronism pertains in respect of a particular gear change the corresponding series of marks appear to be stationary. In one embodiment, as applied to a motor vehicle, the cylindrical indicator 5, Fig. 3, is rotated from the speedometer cable 14 and is illuminated by a lamp 20 connected to the ignition arrangement. The indicator 5 is viewed through a prism 24 mounted on the windscreen 23. The indicator 5 bears three series of markings of a distinctive colour and/or shape. The markings may bear arrow heads indicative of the direction in which the gear change lever should be moved to effect the corresponding gear change. Adjacent pairs of markings of a series may be complementary in colour and/or shape and appear superimposed when synchronism pertains in respect of the related gear change. The said pairs of marks may have complementary parts of the number corresponding to the gear change, Fig. 8, not shown. In another embodiment the indicator comprises an opaque disc 25, Fig. 4, bearing markings 6, 7, 8 printed or sprayed thereon. In another example, Fig. 9, not shown, the series of markings are superimposed. In the example shown in Fig. 14, the indicator 30 comprises a bent disc having a matt surface. The markings are formed by holes in an annular carrier 31 driven by the speedometer.
