Abstract

734,490. Angular bending. TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Feb. 22, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5740/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). An electric contact spring is adjusted by bending it in one direction past its elastic limit, bending it in the opposite direction past its elastic limit, and continuing such bending in alternate directions with decreasing amplitude until the elastic limit is no longer exceeded. In a machine for making the adjustments automatically a relay spring-set 14 having springs 13 is clamped to a datum surface 10a and the tips of the springs are received in apertures in a setting plate 12 held in a reciprocable frame 11. A shaft 25, manually or power driven, drives an adjustable-throw' crank 27 which oscillates a shaft 36 carrying 'a forked member 35. The oscillation of the forked member drives, through a stud 43 and a coupling lever 40 pivoted at 41, one of four links 19 connected to the frame 11 to thereby cause the frame to oscillate. The stud 43 engages a slot 40a in the lever 40 and enters the fork of the member 35, the amplitude of oscillation of the frame 11 depending on the distance between the centres of the shaft 36 and the stud 43. A rod 44 carrying the stud 43 is therefore pivoted in a slide-plate 46, and on rotation of the shaft 25 a cam 24 is slowly rotated to move the slide 46 and thereby the pin 43 so that the amplitude of oscillation of the links 19 and frame 11 is slowly decreased until the stud reaches a point on or near the axis of the shaft 36 when the frame ceases to oscillate. The bending may also cause the springs to be work-hardened. Specification 728,891, [Group XXXVII], is referred to.
