Abstract

734,077. Fuel igniters. FUEL FIRING, Ltd., and FARNHAM, R. C. Aug. 27, 1952 [Aug. 27, 1951], No. 20108/51. Classes 75 (1) and 75 (3). [Also in Group XII] A fuel igniter means, e.g. for pulverulent fuel burners has an ignition burner pivotally mounted for movement into or out of an operative position in which the burner projects through a furnace wall aperture and the burner movement into and out of the operative position effects the opening and closing of aperture obturating means. An atomizing nozzle 1 is centrally mounted in a tube 2 through which air is passed at a pressure of 2-15 inches/water/ gauge and is given a swirling motion by vanes 3 at the mouth of the tube. An igniter 5 is slidably mounted within a casing 4 mounted above the tube 2. The oil nozzle 1, air tube 2 and igniter 5 are mounted as a single unit on a bracket 9 by a shaft 11 rotating in bearings 10. The burner is pivoted from the operative position shown in Fig. 1 to the inoperative position by supplying air to a driving cylinder 19 attached at one end 20 to the furnace wall and at the other end 21 to a bracket 22 mounted on the tube 2. Operation of the cylinder 19 is effected through a relay and auxiliary switch 23. The igniter 5 is projected into the operative position simultaneously with the burner 1 by means of a driving cylinder 24a and the end of the casing 4 is opened by a rod 36, attached to the igniter 5, pivoting a flap 38 upwardly. Operation of the cylinder 24a is effected through a relay and auxiliary switch 24. The igniter 5 is withdrawn after a time lag sufficient to enable the burner 1 to be ignited and the flap 38 is closed. A photo-electric cell 30 is provided so that the burner is moved into the inoperative position in case of ignition failure. The glass face of the cell 30 is either cleaned by an automaticallyoperated blower or wiped by an asbestos cloth 34 operated through a linkage 32 by stops 33, 33a on retraction of the igniter 5. The burner 1 is fitted with top and bottom rails 39, 40 engaged respectively by fins 43, 44 on the outer surfaces of a flap 41 and a plate 42 and in the inoperative burner position the aperture in the furnace wall is closed by the flap 41 and the plate 42; a catch 45 on the plate 42 being engaged by the flap 41. Valves 27, 28 in the fuel line are opened or closed through a linkage 27a, 28a simultaneously with the movement of the burner to or from the operative position. The fuel pipe 29 leading from the valve 28 to the burner 1 is flexible. A seal 18 is provided between a tubular part 17, Fig. 2, of a fixed air duct 15 and a rotatable air duct 16 mounted on the unit. Air is bled from the main duct to the tube 2 to cool the casing 4 and the hollow rails 39 and if desired the outer surface of the door 31. The front of the apparatus is enclosed by a guard 47; a master switch' 49 being provided to cut off the oil, air and current supplies before the guard 47 can be removed. Observation holes 48 are provided to enable the burner to be lit by hand should the igniter fail. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the flap 41 and the plate 42 are replaced by top and bottom plates hinged to the furnace wall and attached respectively to the inner ends of the tubes 4, 2 by means of links so that the plates are moved to an overlapping furnace aperture closing position when the burner is pivoted to the inoperative position. An automaticallyoperated purging device or blower may be mounted on the inner lower peripheral surface of the furnace opening and brought into operation as the burner is swung into the operative position to clear the lower edge of the opening of fuel, dust or other matter which may prevent movement of the burner to the operative position.
