Abstract

733,915. Purifying water; filters. SMALLEY, W., and O'DONOVAN, R. J. June 19, 1952 [June 27, 1951], No. 15266/51. Class 46. [Also in Group VI] An excess of purifying and/or sterilizing agent is first added to water, and any residual agent is then removed by passing the water through a bed of activated carbon or other adsorbing or dechlorinating material, the lower part of the bed being admixed or contacted with a sterilizing agent such as silver deposited on grit, sand or activated carbon. Water from a tank a passes through a venturi in a pipe f, the throat of the venturi being connected to a suction pipe g immersed in sodium hypochlorite solution in a container b, preferably transparent. The rate of addition of reagent is varied by varying the concentration of reagent or by changing the orifice member g1 for one of a different aperture size, or both. The treated water passes to a trough i, constituting a liquid seal, and thence to a tank k, whence it flows into an inert vessel m containing a bed p of activated carbon or the like where excess reagent is adsorbed. Below the bed p and separated from it by a screen r made from an alloy inert to activated carbon is a mass p1 of silver-coated grit or sand, from which the water is drawn off by a pipe o. In an alternative construction the container for the dechlorinating agent may be constructed of porous or permeable material and immersed in the tank k. Alternatively the super-chlorinated water may be drawn off from the tank k (which may or may not be provided with a filter for the clarification of the water prior to or after de-chlorination) through a bed of dechlorinating material in the base of the tank. An air-vent tube h, the lower end of which is at a slightly higher level than the lower end of the suction tube g, may be provided in the reagent container b.
