Abstract

733,819. Bottling. MEYER MANUFACTURING CO., G. J. Jan. 29, 1953, No. 2629/53. Class 125 (2). [Also in Group VI] In transferring a carbonated liquid, e.g. beer, from a storage tank 12, Fig. 1, to the filler bowl 10 of a filling machine, a valveless positive displacement rotar e pump 25, e.g. a gear pump, having a pulsation-free characteristic is interposed in the pipe to regulate the pressure and velocity of the liquid in the pipe without subjecting it to substantial fluctuations in either pressure or velocity. The pump has a high mechanical inertia whereby fluctuations in pressure or velocity due to stopping or starting of the pump will be gradual so as to retain gas in solution in the liquid. The liquid is supplied through a pipe 13 via the pump 25 and through a plurality of supply lines 40 to the bowl 10. Counter-pressure air or other gas is supplied to the bowl 10 through a pipe 50, air column 54 and pipes 60, 63. A pipe 70 receives air from the pipe 63 to a valve housing 72 which contains a nipple 73, Fig. 4, with a vertical bore 74 terminating in a valve seat 74<SP>1</SP> for a ball valve 75 which, when seated, shuts off the flow of air from pipe 70 to a valve chamber 77. When the valve 75 is unseated air flows from pipe 70 into a pipe 80 and through a pipe 81 to actuate a pressure switch 82 arranged to close and supply current to an automatic starter 86 for the pump 25. The valve housing 72 also has a bore 106 with a valve seat 107 at its upper end and containing a valve stem 105 which is in contact with a lever 100 actuated by a float member 91, 92 in the bowl 10. Under the action of the lever 100, the upward movement of the stem 105 moves the valve off its seat 107 permitting air in the valve chamber 77 and the pipe 80 to vent through the bore 106 and at the same time moves the valve 75 on to its upper valve seat 74<SP>1</SP> thus closing off the air from the pipe. 70 and opening the switch 82 to stop the pump 25. Thus when the liquid in the filler bowl 10 reaches the desired level, the pump ceases to operate and when the level drops during filling, the lever 100 is moved downwardly permitting the stem 105 and valve 75 to drop to close the bore 106 and open the bore 74 to the pipe 80 and causing the pump to start operating. The bowl 10 is provided with a relief valve 110 of the spring-pressed diaphragm type.
