Abstract

733,709. Drying refractory objects. COMPAGNIE ROYALE ASTURIENNE DES MINES. Jan. 29, 1953, No. 2631/53. Class 34 (2). In the drying of crucibles, muffles and like refractory objects, a specimen is brought gradually, in a moisture-saturated atmosphere in a test chamber, to a temperature of 35- 40‹ C. and then heated under conditions of controlled ventilation and finally under gradually increasing temperature to obtain a predetermined contraction of the specimen which indicates completion of drying and the objects to be dried are then submitted to similar conditions in a drying chamber with the use of temperatures and durations of heating &c. determined from data obtained in the test on the specimen. In a preferred method the test includes three stages, viz (1) slow and progressive heating for two hours in a saturated atmosphere to reach a temperature of 35-40‹ C.; (2) drying at this temperature for about 15 hours. with ventilation by natural draught to obtain a contraction causing a decrease in height of the specimen of the order of two millimetres per hour; (3) drying at a temperature rising gradually to 70-80‹ C. with increasing ventilation by forced draught to obtain a decrease of height of two to three millimetres per hour. The test chamber, a wooden cabinet lined with heatinsulating material, has a platform 5 to support the specimens 18 and beneath which are electric resistance heaters 6. Dampers 9, 10 and a fan 11 provide means for forced or natural draught and the decrease in height of the specimen is measured by a recording device 12 comprising a drum 13 rotated by clockwork mechanism and carrying a chart upon which a pen 14, carried by a rod 15 sliding in a tube 16 and resting on the top of the specimen 18, draws a trace. The main drying chamber has its base covered with a lattice structure 24 upon which the objects 25 are supported, heating being by finned steam pipes 26 and air intakes 29 and vents 30 connected to a central discharge conduit 31 which may be connected to a fan 33, providing means for ventilation. Measurement of contraction of the objects is by means of a recording device 37 having a pen 39 carried by a rod 40 sliding in a tube 41 and resting on top of one of the objects. The chamber also has thermometers and psychrometers which may be observed through windows 27, 28.
