An X-ray examination table comprises a table-chassis 3 with pivots 4, 5 spaced apart on opposite sides of its mid-point, each pivot having releasable engaging means 8, 9 interconnected by mechanism for placing the pivots alternately into operative condition to permit first one end and then the other of the table-chassis to be tilted upward, means for tilting the tablechassis comprising a rotatable member 14 with an annular rim 23 gapped at 24, and means for blocking actuation of said mechanism except when the table-chassis is in its untilted position. This blocking means comprises a blocking element which moves freely in the gap when the table-chassis is untilted, but moves out of the gap into engagement with the rim when the table is tilted. In the table shown in Fig. 1, the table-chassis is supported on a base 1 enclosing a motor (not shown) driving the rotatable member 14, which consists of a pinion fast with a crank-arm 6 connected by a link 7 to the mid-point of the chassis 3. An X-ray tube (not shown) is movably mounted within chassis 3. The releasable means 8, 9 consist of latchhooks pivoted to the chassis and connected by a link 13, which carries the blocking member comprising a roller 25. If the motor turns pinion 14 anti-clockwise, a roller 18 on crank-arm 6 rocks a cam 17 about its pivot 19. The cam is linked to a lever 15 which is thus rocked clockwise moving link 13 to the right by means of a pin-and-slot connection, so that latch-hook 8 moves into engagement with pivot 4, and latchhook 9 moves clear of pivot 4. Roller 25 is now inside rim 23, and prevents link 13 from moving until the chassis has returned to its untilted position. If pinion 14 is turned clockwise, pivot 4 is freed and pivot 5 is engaged by latch-hook 9, and the table tilts about pivot 5. In this case roller 25 is outside rim 23. In a modification, the members 15, 16, 17 are omitted and a pin replacing roller 25 is engaged by cam surfaces on opposite sides of the gap in rim 23 to move link 13.
