Abstract

732,905. Electric heating panels. OAKLEY, J. L. D. (Dole Refrigerating Co.). Sept. 26, 1952 [Oct. 23, 1951; March 20, 1952], Nos. 24773/51 and 7241/52. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XIII] In a heating unit, two metal walls 1, 2 sealed around their edges form a hollow plate containing a heat conductive substance 15 and having a valve for the maintenance of a sub-atmospheric pressure within the plate, one or more electric resistances 9, with an electrically insulating jacket 10, being in heat exchange contact with at least one wall. The units may be nested in walls, ceilings or floors, e.g. as a skirting board, or be located in ducts or as part of ducts for heating air for heating a room. The heat conductive material may be a liquid or eutectic mixture, such as Wood's metal, Safalloy or Lipowitz alloy, which melts when heated in the plate, or may be paraffin wax, acetaldehyde, cresol, cyclohexane, phenyl-cyclohexane, silico-iodoform, ethylene diamine, nitrostyrene or undecyl alcohol. Each heater 9, 10 is contained in a tube 8 which passes through openings in the edge 4. The units may be finned or one wall corrugated., Fig. 13. Fins may be provided by securing, individually, angle-section strips 32 by bolting or welding the ends to the units as in Fig. 8 or by securing a grating formed by attaching strips 32 to end strips 34a, Fig. 11. The main portion of each strip 32 is curved, Fig. 9, so that, when the ends are secured, the strip is maintained in close contact with the unit surface. The units are thermostatically-controlled individually or in groups and are connected in series, parallel or both. The Provisional Specifications describe also the units having walls of curved and other shapes and used as hot plates. They may be heated by steam or hot water tubes so that the heat conductive substance vaporizes. Spacing elements may separate heating wires and keep them from contact with the walls. According to the first Provisional Specification, the units may stand on feet and be horizontal and contain pentadecane. According to the second Provisional Specification, the tubes may be rectangular in cross-section and the units may contain oil.
