732,411. Cold separation of gas mixtures. FARRER, J. O. (Lummus Co.). May 18, 1953, No. 13957/53. Class 8 (2). A process for separating a compressed gaseous mixture of ethane, ethylene, propane and propylene comprises separating gaseous C2 hydrocarbons in a de-ethanizing tower 10 and feeding them through lines 13, 17 to an ethylene tower 18, feeding liquid C3 hydrocarbons through a line 26 to a propylene tower 27 from the base of which liquid propane product is discharged through a line 29, passing gaseous propylene from the top of tower 27 through a line 31 to a compressor 35, passing a first portion of compressed propylene, e.g. from a first stage 32 of the compressor 35 through lines 66, 50 to the reboiler 28 of the tower 27, passing a second portion, e.g. from a second compression stage 33 through lines 67, 45 to the reboiler 23 of tower 18, passing a third part, e.g. from a third compression stage 34 through a line 39, expansion valves 42, 47, 52 and lines 64, 65 to condensers 14, 20 to provide reflux for towers 10, 18 respectively and also through a line 61 to provide reflux for tower 27, and passing a fourth part of compressed propylene gas through a line 40 for discharge as product; ethylene product gas being discharged from a container 21 through a line 23<SP>1</SP>, and product ethane being discharged from tower 18 through a line 24. The propylene gas issuing from the third compression stage 34 and the expansion valve 42 passes to an accumulator 43 connected by a gas line 44 to the line 67, and liquid propylene then passes through the valve 47 to an accumulator 48 having a gas line 49 connected to the line 66 and thereafter passes through the valve 52 to a further accumulator 51 having a gas line 54 connected to the line 31. From the base of accumulator 51 liquid propylene is forced by a pump 59 to the condensers 14, 20 from which vapour is returned through lines 63, 62 to the compression stage 32. Liquid propylene from the reboilers 23, 28 passes along lines 45<SP>1</SP>, 50<SP>1</SP> to the accumulators 48, 51. Specification 700,689, [Group XIII], is referred to.
