The projecting flaps of an adhesive-coated strip 9 attached to the contact zone between a cigarette 8 and mouthpiece 8a fed to a continuously rotating member 2 and supported thereon in abutting relation are in turn folded down by radiallymovable elements 20, 36 whilst the assembly 8, 8a is in movement in a continuous path without rotation or radial displacement relative to the member 2. As shown, a rotary drum 10 delivers assemblies of two cigarettes 8 and an interposed double-length mouthpiece 8a to flutes 3 of a drum 2, provided with elements 20, 36 for each flute, at a point where suction is applied to the flutes via bores 4<1>, 4<11> from a chamber 5 defined between the drum interior and a stationary segment 5<1> therein. As the assemblies 8, 8a pass beneath and are pinned down by the bars 14 of a rotary cage 13 the elements 20, 36 are partially projected outwards together to initiate wrapping of the strip 9, each element in turn as the drum 2 travels on being then projected fully and retracted partially to effect full flap folding-down. Finally, the elements 20, 36 are fully retracted and the assemblies 8, 8a pass a knife 44 which divides them into mouthpiece cigarettes. Gears 15, 17 on the members 10, 13 mesh a gear 16 on the drum 2. The elements 20, 36 are pivoted, preferably under the constraint of a torsional spring urging them towards the assemblies 8, 8a, to carriers 18, 34 operated against springs 30, 43 by rockshafts 24, 31, arms 23, 38 of which engage pins 22, 37 on the respective carriers and further arms 27, 42 of which have rollers engaging stationary cam tracks 29, 40. Each element 20 or 34 may be in two or three axially aligned portions. The carriers 18, 34 may be mounted on a parallelogram linkage ; the bars 14 may be independently controlled. The mouthpieces 8a may be paper tubes and/or filter elements.
