Abstract
731,766. Gauging toothed gears. GLEASON WORKS. June 9, 1953 [June 18, 1952], No. 15825/53. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for gauging pairs of segmental gears G, P (i.e. gears in which by omitting one or more teeth from one or both gears of a pair or by other means the gears cannot rotate continuously in mesh) comprises a drive spindle 14, Fig. 1, journalled in a support 12, driven spindle 15 journalled in a support. 13, means for adjusting the two supports relatively on a base 11 to bring the gears which are mounted on spindles into desired running position, a reversible motor 16 connected to the drive spindle, means for resisting rotation of the driven spindle, and means rotatable in time with the rotation of one of the spindles for operating a control to reverse the motor at selected positions of the latter spindle. The motor 16, which is of hydraulic type, comprises a wobbler plate 44, Fig. 6, mounted on its drive shaft 45 and acted upon by a plurality of pistons 43 reciprocating in cylinders to which hydraulic pressure is supplied under the control of an annular valve 47 actuated by an eccentric 46 on the shaft 45. Hydraulic pressure to the motor is supplied by a pump P through a solenoid-actuated valve 53 and shuttle valve 56 which is alternately positioned at opposite ends of its stroke so as to reverse the direction of fluid supply to the motor and thereby the direction of rotation of the latter. Reciprocation of the shutter valve is effected by hydraulic pressure supplied alternately to its opposite ends by a reversing valve 57 carried by the support 12. The core of the latter valve is rotated between its two positions corresponding to reversal of the motor by the coaction of stops 71, 72, Fig. 3, adjustably mounted in a slot in the periphery of the spindle 14 with fingers 68, 69 on the core. The valve 53 is actuated to start the machine by closing a switch 77 and depressing a lever which closes a second switch 42 and applies a band brake to spindle 15. The support 12 is adjustable transversely of the spindle 14 by a screw 21, and the support 13 is adjustable vertically by a screw 25 on a column 26 rising from a slide 24 which is similarly adjustable transversely of the spindle 15. The support 12 may be moved rapidly to and from operating position by power means, with which may be associated means as described in Specification 657,499 for obtaining a pre-selected amount of back-lash between the gears. The latter means comprise the journalling of the spindle 14 in a carrier 27 which is pivoted to the support 12 and when floatingly held permits the gears to be run together by hand, any eccentricity of the gears being shown by a dial indicator 32; when used in this way, a switch 33, Fig. 6, is opened automatically to prevent power operation of the machine. If desired, a constant drag brake may be provided for imposing a pre-determined load upon the spindle 15.
