[Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] Engine starter apparatus for a motor vehicle having automatic transmission comprises a manual lever 20 mountable on the steering column and movable in one plane through the range of ratio control positions. A switch in circuit with a relay to a starter motor, a switch operating lever 7 connected to the manual lever which, when moved to a position in the plane beyond the ratio control, operates the starter motor, and a relatively strong spring urging the lever back into the range. As shown the invention is applied to a transmission control shaft 21 mounted on the steering column and controlled by the manual lever 20 into a starter position S, and ratio control positions P, N, D, L, R. The lever 20 is connected by the shaft 21 and linkage 22, 23 to the lever 7 of the switch (see Group XXXVII). When the lever 20 is moved from position P toward position S, against the action of the relatively strong spring in the switch, the arm 7 moves into a zone A and contacts 2, 4 are bridged, which if the ignition switch 11 is closed, energises through the relay the starter switch 14 to operate the starter motor 17 from a battery 12. When the lever 20 is moved from position P toward position R against the action of a lighter spring provided in the switch, the arm 7 enters another zone A near its position R and contacts 1, 3 are bridged serving to connect a lamp 8 rearwardly projecting on the vehicle either through the ignition switch 11 being closed or through a lighting switch 18 being closed.
