Abstract
730,673. Harvesting root-crops. BUTCHER, R. F., WITT, R. F., and GARFORD, N. A. Oct. 14, 1953 [Nov. 26, 1952], No. 29941/52. Class 6 (3). A root-crop harvester comprises a pair of shares 8 from which excavated material passes between the runs of two superimposed slat-conveyers 9, 10 travelling at different rates to cause a tumbling of the crop, which is further tumbled by passing over rotary slatted drums 31, 32, the drums extending transversely to the line of movement and receiving the crop adjacent to their one ends, the crop being passed both over and along the drums to be discharged at their other ends on to an elevator 40 by which the crop is delivered to a trailer (not shown). The drums and conveyers are mounted on a wheeled frame 1 which is attached to the lifting mechanism 54 56, 76 of a tractor 2, the various moving parts being driven by a jointed shaft 22 from the power-take-off. The forward end of the upper conveyer 9 is mounted on pivoted arms 17 enabling it to adjust itself to different sizes of crop. The drums 31, 32 extend transversely further than the wheel track of the tractor and are mounted in a cage 45 which has an outlet at one end to the elevator 40 which is offset from the tractor centre-line. The crop is topped by a knife 67 floatingly positioned by feelerwheels 63, the cut-tops being flung transversely by rotary flails 72.
