Abstract
730,582. Pressure-relieving devices for fluids. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., [formerly ANGLO-IRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd.], and WILLIAMS, C. A. H. July 28, 1953 [May 8, 1952], No. 11669/52. Class 135. [Also in Group XXVIII] The possibility of a burst in a piping system for loading or unloading oil tankers when the flow is suddenly checked as for instance by the closing of a valve is reduced or eliminated by arranging in a shore pipe line 10 to which one or more flexible hoses leading to the tanker are connected a flexible tube filled with gas under a pressure equal to or slightly greater than that of the liquid in the pipe. The flexible tube consists of sections 16, 17 of rubber reinforced with rayon. The sections are connected by short metal tubes 18 and their ends are corrugated as at 22 where they are connected to similarly corrugated parts on the tubes 18 and end plugs 19, 20. The sections 16, 17 are protected by wire casings 24, 25. Air or inert gas under pressure is introduced through a pipe 14 passing through the end wall 13 of the pipe 10 and fitted with a valve 15. The flexible hoses are connected to branches such as 11.
