In the preparation of textile fibres for delivery to a spinning frame, a lap such as may be produced by a picker or scutcher is unrolled and disposed, as by folding, to form a multiply batt, the material of the batt is loosened and the fibres straightened, as by " precombing," during advance into the field of action of a roller card, and the carded material is immediately formed into " rovings." As illustrated in Fig. 1, as a fleece 2 is unwound from a lap roll 3 by mechanism which may be of the type described in Specification 259,957, [Class 120(i)], it is disposed in transverse diagonal folds upon a conveyer 4 to form a batt of uniform thickness which is advanced onto a feed table 5 with the upper surface of which a feed roll 6 co-operates to feed the batt to a licker-in roll or " comber " 7 which tears tufts from the batt and carries them downwardly across clearing blades 8 and between the roll 7 and trough 9 for delivery to the main cylinder 10 of a roller card which includes doffing means whereby the carded fleece is delivered to a tape condenser 11 : the roller 7 is covered with small diameter, stiff, sharp pointed needles or long, flexible, wire teeth or needles which may be rigidly set in a covering of the core of the roll and of such length as to extend through the thickest batt. In the modification of Fig. 2, a " precombing " cylinder covered by card clothing of coarser gauge than that on the cylinder 10, is employed and the stationary table 5 is replaced by a series of parallel levers 13 forming part of a regulating mechanism by which the speed of the roll 6 is varied inversely with the thickness of the fleece delivered thereto : the forward ends of the levers 13 press the fleece against the roll 6 and a connection 14 attached to the rear end of each lever transmits motion thereof in response to variations in fleece thickness to a set of evener levers forming the last in a series actuating a shift mechanism to move a belt embracing cone pulleys whereby the speed of the roll 6 is adjusted, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown).
