Abstract

A finger-nail enamel composition is obtained by mixing together components comprising 10-30 parts by weight of a film-forming base, which is a cellulose derivative or a mixture of a cellulose derivative and a resin, 10-30 parts by volume of a mixture of at least two odorous substances compounded into a perfume providing a solvent for the film-forming base, with or without a plasticizer therefor, the major portion of said mixture consisting of substances which have not less than 7 carbon atoms and at least one methyl group per molecule and are selected from the class consisting of esters, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and essential oils, and 40-80 parts by volume of a diluent which is an aliphatic alcohol having 2-4 carbon atoms or is a propionic acid ester. Parts by weight are expressed in relation to parts by volume in the same ratio as grams to cubic centimetres. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate or nitrate and the resin, if any, may be shellac, rosin, mastic, elemi, dammar, sandarac, kauri, ester gum or other natural or modified natural resin, or it may be a synthetic resin such as a polyvinyl, polystyrene, urea, or coumarone synthetic resin. Specified solvent components and plasticizers are:-formic, orthoformic, acetic, propionic, butyric, sebacic, oenanthylic, pelargonic, valerianic, benzoic, salicylic, anthranilic, phenylacetic, cinnamic and like carboxylic acid esters, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, vanillin, heliotropin, methyl heptenone, irone, ionones, muscone, civettone, acetophenone, benzylidene acetone, methyl-b -naphthyl ketone, benzophenone, citronellol, rhodinol, geraniol, nerol, linalol, esters of terpenic alcohols, citronellal, rhodinal, citral, geranial, neral and hydroxy-citronellal. Artificial musks, which are tert.-butyl-nitroxylenes, may be used as plasticizers. Lavender oil, neroli oil, lemon oil, cananga oil, ylang-ylang oil and other essential oils may be used as solvents and plasticizers. Other specified plasticizers are coumarin, acetyl isoeugenol, menthol, paracresol benzoate, benzyl cinnamate, diphenylmethane and anisic alcohol. The diluent may be ethyl alcohol, butyl or isobutyl alcohol or isobutyl propionate.
