[Also in Group XXXIII] The ratio of longitudinalmovement of two links 4, 5 is varied by varying the inclination of a surface 2 along which is movable a pivot connection between the two links. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the part tubular member 2 is pivotable about an axis 40 by means of link 18 joined to lug 20. The casing 22 contains an internally-threaded cylinder mounted in thrust ball bearings. A pulley is fast to the cylinder, and is rotated by cables driven by a reversible electric motor or manually. The cylinder contains a threaded block attached to lug 20, so that rotation of the cylinder causes the leg to rise or fall, tilting member 2. A pivoted connection between links 4 and 5 slides in member 2, so that the ratio of the longitudinal movements of the reds depends on the inclination of member 2. As in Fig. 3, member 2 consists of angle irons 1 secured to rod, rotatable by link 18. The pivotal connection 6 between rods 4 and 5, of which the latter is forked, is slidable in angle irons 1 by means of rollers 8 or phosphor-bronze slippers. The member 2 may be of any desired shape to cause the ratio of link movement to vary with the inclination of member 2 in any way.
