Abstract

729,910. Flexible hoses. HOOVER, Ltd. Dec. 31, 1953 [Jan. 21, 1953], No. 36391/53. Class 99 (2). A hollow elastomer cord 12, which may be oval in cross-section but which preferably is initially circular in crosssection, is disposed in the spaces between adjacent convolutions of a helical winding 10 of metal spring wire surrounded by at least one tubular layer of flexible elastomer 11. The cord 12 is wound under tension so that the layer 11 is pressed into the spaces and assumes a wavelike longitudinal section, and may be bonded to the layer 11. The winding 10 may be preformed and placed on a mandrel such that the convolutions of the winding are uniformly spaced and under axial and circumferential stress, an extruded tube of polyvinyl chloride being expanded by air pressure and assembled over the winding. During winding of the cord 12 which may be of extruded polyvinyl chloride, a solvent may be applied to the surface of the tube 11 ahead of the point of application of the cord 12 to bond the tube and cord, and the completed hose may afterwards be heat cured.
