Abstract

729,756. Making plastic interlayers for windscreens. LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD GLASS CO. July 31, 1950, No. 19/53. Divided out of 729,733, [Group XXXII]. Class 87 (2). Apparatus for shaping a sheet of plastic material comprises a flexible frame, upon which' the sheet is mounted, adapted to be supported by a rigid frame and means for distorting the flexible frame. The plastic sheet is intended to form an interlayer in a curved automobile wihdscreen made according to the method described in Specification 729,733, [Group XXXII]. The sheet is mounted by means of an adhesive such as ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether upon the flexible frame of Fig. 4 which comprises lower and upper bendable members 22, 23 and rigid side members 20, 21. The mounted sheet is then partially dyed, preferably by the method described in Specification 729,755, [Group IV (c)], to provide an upper glare-reducing area in the finished windscreen. After the dyeing process the flexible frame is mounted on the rigid frame 66 of Fig. 11 by means of grooved locating blocks 80, 83. A central bar 73 is mounted to slide longitudinally between blocks 72 on the rigid frame 66 and is provided with two further locating members 84 for the flexible frame. The top of the sliding bar 73 carries a rearwardly directed flange 74, Fig. 8, within which is received the screw-threaded portion of a bolt 76 whose lower end is rotatably located within a flange of the rigid frame 66. By turning the bolt 76 the bar 73 is raised and the plastic sheet distorted to the shape shown in Fig. 11. Blocks 82 on the rigid frame 66 limit the movement of the upper member 23 of the flexible frame and hence determine the amount of distortion of the' sheet. The distorted sheet is heated in an oven for a sufficient length of time to remove all moisture and solvents from the dye bath. It is then cooled and finally removed from the frame. Specification 729,734, [Group XXXII], also is referred to.
