Abstract

An electrical insulating composition comprises from 70-95 per cent, preferably 80 per cent, polyethylene and 5-30 per cent, preferably 20 per cent, submicroscopic silica dust with a maximum particle size of approximately 50 millimicrons. The polyethylene may be mixed, at an elevated temperature if necessary, as a solid or in solution, for example in benzene or toluene-ether, with the dried silica, either in powder form or as a paste in the solvent, and the composition may be extruded at a temperature between 380 DEG and 420 DEG F. and quenched to 50 DEG F. in ten minutes.
