Abstract

749,924. Thermionic valves. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PARTRIDGE, J. H. Jan. 13, 1955 [Jan. 13, 1954], No. 1020/54. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXIII]. In the manufacture of a glass article by sintering a compact of powdered glass moulded under pressure to the desired shape, the glass is substantially free from alkalies and has a composition consisting of (percentage by weight) SiO 2 50-70; Al 2 O 3 15-35; CaO 6-25; ThO 2 and/or one or more of BaO, SrO, MgO, ZnO, PbO 1-6; and B 2 O 3 0-8. The glass has a high dielectric strength and is non- permeable to gases and is particularly of use for insulators in electric discharge devices, e.g. for small bushings in thermionic valves. The glass powder and a binder dispersion are mixed and heated to drive off the solvent etc.; the dried mixture is granulated and compacted to the desired shape which is then heated to such temperature as will remove the binder and sinter the glass.
