A device for typewriting and like office machines wherein a top copy of a number of sheets being typed is adjustable relative to the undercopies by guide means running on a guide track on the paper carriage, the adjustment is selectively arranged by the spring-urged engagement of a pin 30 into one of the notches on a bail 22 forming part of the paper carriage. The top sheet C, Fig. 8, can be moved relative to the undercopies so that (i) the debit column of sheet C registers with the credit columns of sheet B and A as shown, (ii) the two columns on each sheet agree, or (iii) the credit column of sheet C registers with the debit columns of sheet B and A. Movement of the sheet C is facilitated by a travelling structure comprising a sheet-iron guide 27 having end folds 28 to hold the sheet in position. The guide 27 is strengthened by a strip 29, Fig. 4, to which is fitted a pair of rollers 26 which travel on the top edge of a guide track 19 attached to brackets 17, Figs. 1, 1A, which are pivoted to side' shields 15 so that it may be pivoted to the dotted position shown in Fig. 4. At the lefthand end of the guide track 19 is an upright 20 pivotally supporting a notched bail 22 which at its other end has a slotted connection 23 to a further upright 20. The travelling structure 26-29 is urged to the left by a spring 34 and the pin 30 at the back of the plate 27 engages in one of the three notches 31, 32, 33 in the bail 22 which is urged upwardly by a spring 25. The pin is released from the notches by depression of a knob 24 at the right-hand end of the bail 22, and the travelling structure is moved by the spring 34 or moved manually against the spring as required. The bail 22 is formed in two parts so that the position of the notches 31-33 can be accurately fixed. Below the guide 27 are a pair of paper clamping rubber rollers 38 which are rotatively fixed but axially slidable with the guide 27 on shafts 37 geared together' and to a hand wheel 42. To insert the papers in the machine, the sheet A is placed in the guide 27 and fed by the rollers 38 to the platen 3 where it is fed back by friction rollers 6, 7 mounted on spring-loaded brackets on a common axle 8. The rollers 6, 7 are moved into and out of contact with the platen by cams on a control shaft 9 coupled to an operating lever 11. When the sheet A is clear of the rollers 38 the attachment is pivoted backwardly about pivot 16 to allow the top part of sheet A to be bent backwardly below a pivotal sheet holder 13 (Fig. 7, not shown). The second sheet B is similarly positioned but extends above the sheet holder 13, rollers 35 on the lower edge of the plate 19 hold these two sheets to the platen. Sheet C is then inserted but remains clamped by the rollers 38. In a modification, Fig. 10, the travelling structure comprises a sheet-iron guide 59 guided on spindles 56, 57 mounted on a centre piece 52 with end brackets 53 pivoted on bolts 51 on supports attached to the machine carriage. In front of the guide 59 are two transparent walls 62, 63 with a space between them. Hinged to the brackets 53 at 78 is a front guide plate 71 which when the carriage is in a right-hand position is vertical, guiding sheets from clamping rollers 58 on the travelling member into place between the platen 3 and a platen guide plate 5 (equivalent to plate 5, Fig. 4). When the carriage moves to the left for typing, the plate 71 is automatically pivoted to an out of the way position by a fixed stop 68 acting on a cam surface 73 on the plate.
