Abstract
A foam containing a multitude of small bubbles but substantially free from large bubbles is made by reacting an alkyd resin with a polyisocyanate in presence of a surface-active agent preferably present in an amount of 0.1 to 5 per cent by weight of the alkyd. The foamable compositions may be moulded (see Group V) and the products obtained used in the construction of radar canopies, guided missile components and aircraft parts. The Specification contains a list of polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic acids to be condensed to produce the alkyd and a list of polyisocyanates. The alkyd preferably has an acid number of 35-45. Specified surface active agents are potassium oleate, zinc stearate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monopalmitate, sorbitan trioleate, sorbitan monolaurate, sorbitan monostearate, polyoxyethylene sorbitol laurate, lecithin, lanolin, diamyl sodium sulphosuccinate and dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate. In an example a mixture of (1) 250 grams of an alkyd resin obtained from glycerol, adipic acid and phthalic anhydride and having an acid number 42-46 and hydroxyl number 465-490; (2) 210 grams tolylene diisocyanate; and (3) 2.5 grams of a surface-active agent was foamed and cured between laminated glass fabric skins by heating for one hour at 140-150 DEG F. and for two hours at 275 DEG F. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 547,672 and 553,733.ALSO:A foamable mixture of an alkyd resin and an organic polyisocyanate containing a surface active agent (see Group IV (a)) is moulded to produce a foamed panel or a foamed radome. In examples (1) Test panels were prepared by placing a laminated glass fabric skin on an aluminium plate, placing a frame having the same dimensions as the plate and a 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch cross-section on the skin and pouring the foamable mixture into the confining space. A second glass fabric skin was placed on top and the mould closed by placing an aluminium plate on top of the second skin. The assembly was clamped together with "C" clamps and foamed by heating for one hour at 140-150 DEG F. and two hours at 275 DEG F. During the heating the rising foam seals the air escape, thus creating a restraint tending to repress further expansion of bubbles in the foam. The glass fabric skin may be replaced by wood veneer, aluminium foil or steel sheet. (2) A radome was made by pouring the mixture into the void between two resin laminated glass fabric skins which are confined between a male and a female mould and foaming the composition by heat. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 547,672 and 553,733, [both in Group IV].
