Abstract
729,514. Mixing foam rubber. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Jan. 15, 1953, No. 1274/53. Class 86. A mixer for foam rubber consists of a housing having stator blades arranged on circles concentric with a shaft, a rotor secured to the shaft and having blades arranged for co-operation with the stator blades, a tubular opening arranged coaxially of the shaft for feeding material into the housing, and a free-ended extension on the shaft extending within the opening and radially spaced from the walls thereof. In Fig. 1, air from a line 16 passes out through perforations 82 in a tube 81, is rendered turbulent and is dispersed in latex flowing through the tube 12, and an intimate mixture of latex and air enters the inlet branch 73 of a mixer 14. In the branch 73 the stream of aerated latex is cleared by a torpedo-shaped free-ended extension 67, on the rotor shaft 56 of the mixer 14, so that aerated latex will enter the mixer housing 38 under conditions of uniform radial spreading. Zinc oxide, an accelerator which also assists in the gelling of the foam, is added in metered amounts through an inlet tube 77 of relatively small bore. In the mixer 14 a rotor disc 57 carries on each face protruding, integral arcuate segments 58 which are concentric with and extend between similar segments 49, 51 inwardly protruding from the base 39 and cover 43 of the.stator housing 38. The aerated latex flows first radially outwards from the branch 73 and then flows radially inwards towards an outlet chamber 53 and is churned by the relatively moving segments 58 and 49, 51 so that the bubbles are reduced in size. The foamed latex then moves out through the line 27 and is applied to an inlet 31 of a second mixer 32, Fig. 3, in which gelling agent is added. The mixer 32 is smaller than the mixer 14 and differs in that the torpedo member 67<SP>1</SP> has an enlarged vaned head 83 and in that the spaces between the rotor segments 581 extend only halfway to the rotor disc 571. The gelling agent is introduced through an inlet tube 88 of relatively small bore and by-pass openings 92, 93 in the outer wall of the rotor 57<SP>1</SP> are stated to overcome the effects of " pulse " feeding of the gelling agent through the inlet tube. In an alternative arrangement for initially dispersing the air in the latex, Fig. 6 (not shown), a diverging annular stream of air is concentre with and impinges upon an annular stream of latex within a restricted annular mixing space and the flow of air and latex are regulated by adjusting the clearances of the annular passages which form the annular streams. The mixers 14 and 32 may be duplicated in a system, Fig. 5 (not shown), in which units may be put in service alternately so that production is not interrupted during periods of cleaning or repair.
